Tomorrow I'm off to Skopje, Macedonia for a one week holiday. I've got the picturebook back now, so there ought to be a few more pics and maybe a couple of videos gracing the archives of BOLDRA.COM before too long.
For those of you who hadn't noticed, The Former Yugoslavian Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) has been in a little bit of turmoil recently. Albanians from bordering Yugoslavia and Albania have been slipping quietly over the border and rousing the local ethnic Albanians to a frenzy with patriotic songs and dapper arm bands with pictures of eagles on them. These white-haired muslims chaps have been passing around guns and telling their brethren and sistren of Macedonia to demand greater representation in government.
Some of this greater representation has already been forthcoming, with a new government coalition announced Sunday night. Other, more extreme, demands have not been met - such as part of FYROM joining Albania.
So what what busines does Boldra have in this trouble-zone? None - I'm just going popping by for a beer with an old mate. We'll also be playing chicken in minefields and taking a large bag of flour around the country, pretending that it's heroin.
I've been reading up on local customs and trying to prepare myself for the dangers I may encounter, but just in case I don't make it back, I want a flashy funeral, with lots of strippers. And robots.
Update May 23rd 2001:
