Q: So where are you now? A: In Frankfurt. Tomorrow to Berlin. There are fewer dogs and tourists here than in munich, and more people speak english. Much better. Frankfurt is a banking city - scyscrapers and stylish bars galore. Lots of foreign restaurants. Very reminiscent of Sydney. Q: Hows the accommodation? A: Thank god I'm not staying in the hostel! I passed the hostel earlier today - before that I could have sworn all the beggars were outside the main station - now I understand that when they've finished begging, they go and hang out outside the youth hostel and shoot up. Besides, When I checked into my hotel, they asked me for an email address. I put down hotel-inspector@boldra.com and they gave me free breakfast. Cool. Q: There are Lots of beggars? A: 1% of Germans are unemployed. Seems like they're all in Frankfurt. The first couple of times I was approached by beggars, I just told them "I understand no German" and they gave up. I thought this was going to work for a while, but after about 20 minutes, they started speaking english to me. So I thought, "well, they speak English, they speak German, I've got one language up my sleeve - geekspeak." The next beggar who came up to me rattling his cup, I hit him with "Look - I'm grepping /etc/passwd for you, but there's nothing on STDOUT." He rattled his cup and tried again. "where's your account? There's nothing in /home..." He just stared and shrugged. "Sorry I can't help you - try emailling root from hotmail or something." Q: So how are the people there? A: Bloody Great! I went on a bar crawl with Blaise on Thursday night, he works for Deutsche Bank here now (he used to work at ozemail). He put up a great performance for a man who had to meet his girlfriend in Copenhagen early the next day - at 2am we were buying kebabs in Alt Sachsehausen "Old sex" to the locals. There's a bunch of other people who've made Frankfurt memorable; Peter from Dublin who I shared jokes with at the irish pub (there's about 5 here), beautiful Yvonne who kept me warm one night, and good ol' Leo, from Sydney, who works here at the internet cafe. |
